Lifson, MD and Carl Salzman, MD Early Registration Cut-off Date December 18, 2009 OBJECTIVEThe objectives of this class are to provide a review of the mechanisms and an update of the clinical applications of psychotropic drug treatments for psychiatric disorders. The class is directed towards experienced clinicians with a working knowledge of basic psychiatric diagnosis and psychopharmacology treatment. This course is designed so that participants will be able to:
An updated review of neurobiology and brain function will be presented, taking the attendee through neurotransmission sequence from synthesis to gene transcription. Interaction between genes and the environment will be emphasized throughout the course. Potential new uses for atypical antipsychotic drugs as well as potential new uses for mood stabilizers will be reviewed. The use of antipsychotic drugs in neurologic disorders will be presented. A comprehensive review of depression in psychiatric patients as well as comorbid with medical illnesses will be emphasized along with the use of antidepressants of all treatment classes for comorbid depressions. Psychiatric medications for the elderly will be presented. The neurobiological mechanisms of anxiety and anxiety‑spectrum disorders as well as their treatment will be reviewed, including obsessive‑compulsive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, PTSD, and general anxiety disorder. The course will emphasize the establishment and importance of therapeutic alliance when prescribing all psychotropic medications. ACCREDITATIONPhysicians: Harvard Medical School is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Psychologists: The Massachusetts Mental Health Center is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. All weeklong programs meet the criteria for 15 credit hours. The weekend seminars meet the criteria for 10 credit hours.
