OBJECTIVE

The objectives of this course are for the learner to be able to:

  • Identify and employ cognitive‑behavioral strategies that can be used in working with anxiety, depression, couples and families, and crisis/emergency settings;
  • Describe instances in which cognitive‑behavioral strategies should not be used with either anxiety, depression, couple and families, or in crisis/emergency settings;
  • Identify when to use straight behavioral techniques over cognitive techniques;
  • Create and assign homework exercises and choose the most appropriate and effective course of treatment for the anxious or depressed patients and couples and family therapy.

Cognitive‑behavior therapy (CBT) has become a high profile intervention due to its documented effectiveness in a variety of areas, including anxiety, depression, couple and family problems, and crisis intervention. CBT is not only a primary method of treatment, but is also quite adaptable to integrating with a number of traditional approaches to psychotherapy. This course will enable participants of different levels of familiarity with CBT to learn CBT interventions that will enhance their clinical practice. This seminar focuses on cognitive‑behavioral approaches with patients who suffer from anxiety and depression. It will also provide strategies employable with couples and family therapies, as well as methods for crisis and emergency situations. Participants will learn techniques and strategies for working with patients who are struggling with problems in these various content domains.

This course is supported in part by an unrestricted education grant from OmegaBrite.
